Yeah you read that headline right, this the best music of 2013 fool. You gotta let that shit marinate. Every year-end list last year looked stupid as fuck because Beyoncé dropped in mid-December. Take a breath yall.
I’m doing albums because singles are too hard to keep track of since I listen to those more in YouTube or SoundCloud than iTunes. Went through my library and arrived at 10 without counting, it was weird. I’m only ranking 5, the other 5 are just honorable mention. This is because I don’t want to put much effort into ranking them.
- CHVRCHES – The Bones of What You Believe
I just listen to this way more than anything else that came out last year. It’s really good, a lot of fun.
- Danny Brown – Old
Favorite rapper right now. This album got me through the winter. I got too many adjectives for it.
- Charli XCX – True Romance
She’s the good part of “Fancy” and I wish she was the biggest pop star on the planet because her music is better than all that other shit that’s still good but not this good.
- Run the Jewels
Rappity-rap at its finest. Makes me wanna light cop cars on fire and headbutt Wall Street guys and shit.
The only one of her albums that I’ve listened to all the way through instead of just the singles and it’s brilliant. When it came out people called it her Thriller and I think that’s an overstatement it’s more like her Purple Rain or, I don’t know, comparing legendary albums is always tricky. It’s peak Beyoncé for sure. She owns it utterly even when she’s biting other people’s sound. Try and tell me “Rocket” isn’t her take on D’Angelo’s “Untitled (How Does It Feel)” and I’ll fight you but it’s still my favorite song on the album you know? We all bow down.
- Steve Earle – The Low Highway
It’s got a song about burning the Wal-Mart down.
- Kanye West – Yeezus
Yeah yeah yeah I know I know he’s so full of himself and whatever, I don’t care. He is a genius, deal with it. He has a vision and commits to it and takes risks that pay off in big ways. No one can match him for artistic ambition, and he’s a true pioneer. Whatever Kanye does (musically), a buncha wannabes are copying a few years later. Wish he woulda put more time into the lyrics though.
- Burial – Rival Dealer
Everyone loves this and I’m no exception, it’s amazing. Fucking love Burial. Gotta be in a very specific mood to listen to it, but when I am there’s nothing better.
- The National – Trouble Will Find Me
For me (this list is about me), The National are the music equivalent of my comfy TV chair or my favorite pair of sneakers or the cyan hoodie I’ve worn almost every day for the past 2+ years. It’s uncomplicated comfort and familiarity. I know this band, I’d know their sound in my sleep. Every album has a handful of truly great songs and the rest are just very good. Reliable as it gets, I trust them enough to buy their music without listening to it first.
- Boards of Canada – Tomorrow’s Harvest
I’d been waiting so long for new BoC and it was worth the wait. Feel like they were watching The Walking Dead on mute a lot when they made this album, in the best way.
This post isn’t soccer-related because this blog is basically defunct as a sports publication. We’ve tried to restart like 3 seasons running and never have the endurance to go a whole season without getting too busy or bored. I don’t want to get a new domain just for personal stuff. So you know, there it is. *shrug*
