I had a pretty great time watching the Women’s World Cup this summer. I kept thinking I should write something about women’s soccer. I wanted to talk about how exciting and skillful and fun the tournament was despite the massive gap between the financial, institutional, and cultural support that the women’s game gets compared to the men’s.
Then I remembered that I know absolutely nothing about the global organizational structures of women’s soccer and don’t have anything useful or interesting to say about it.

Now think about the fact that Marta, Wambach, and Sawa make a fraction of the money that Ronaldo, Rooney, and Messi do. To be honest, they probably don’t even make as much as the reserve players at top tier men’s teams. Ridiculous, isn’t it?
